8 steps to good sign design- Step 5

Think in pictures
Graphics and pictures are still worth a thousand words. A picture of a mouth–watering cake may make a greater impact on potential customers than any slogans about baking the best cakes in the county.

8 steps to good sign design- Step 4

Simple messages
Experts agree that when it comes to signs, less is better. OAAA recommends brevity — seven words or fewer, and no more than three elements per sign.
Designers at Global Sign and Awning in Roseburg, Oregon say your sign should quickly and clearly state three important points:
  • Who you are — your company name and identity
  • What you do — this section usually highlights your industry or trade, and is given the greatest prominence
  • How well you do it — a short slogan or company motto might be used in this area

Use tried and true fonts
Sticking to simple fonts will make your sign easier to read. Finke suggests Times Roman, Sans Serif (not too much flare), Frutiger, and Universe fonts. OAAA also advises allowing for adequate spacing between letters and lines, as well as using both upper and lower characters.

The power of a good sign
According to experts at the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA), signs are a terrific way to reach consumers on the go. The organization adds that case studies continually show that signs increase awareness, influence purchasing, and sell products.

To maximize the power of signs, experts recommend following these design guidelines:

Remember readability
Be sure your lettering is large enough to read from a distance. Gail Finke, a freelance writer who specializes in sign design, stresses, "if people can't see what the sign says then you've just wasted a lot of money."
Kathy Morrison, a sign designer, recommends the following industry standards:
Reading Distance
Letter Height
100 ft.
1¾" to 2" or above
200 ft.
3½" and above
400 ft.
7" and above
600 ft.
10½" and above
800 ft.
14" and above
1000 ft.

TV Advertising vs Digital Signage and LED Signs

PVRs & TIVO

Indoor digital signs and outdoor LED video board advertising cannot be blocked. Unlike TV, there is no TIVO or PVR (personal video recorder) to block out commercials and advertisements. Some studies show that up to over 30% of 18-30 year olds own a PVR. That means that 30% of the population has the ability to block all TV advertising. With digital signs and LED signs, ads cannot be blocked, only ignored.

TV Viewership Decreasing & Fragmented Audience

There are more channels than ever before which means a more fragmented audience.
People are spending less time watching TV and less time watching commercials. This trend is especially popular amongst the youth. Today youth are multitasking masters. They watch TV, surf the internet, instant message, text message, and potentially even do homework all at the same time. There is no way they can consume the advertising on TV unless commercials have their undivided attention.

Internet TV

Some consumers view some, if not all of their television (sports, TV shows, movies, etc.) completely through the internet either by downloading it commercial free or streaming it online which is good for internet advertisers. The internet is the next TV. Just look at YouTube and all of the file sharing websites. It is now possible to stream movies or download entire seasons of one’s favorite TV show commercial and advertisement free.

Cell Phones, Data Phones & the iPod

There is a growing group of customers that consume their television on their mobile devices with podcasts, and videocasts as well as personal devices with vast memory capabilities (iPhone, iTouch, etc.)

What makes a good design?

Size and Shape
A great sign is well-balanced in size and shape.  The right proportions and spacing is what makes a sign look professional and appealing.  Be sure that you determine what you are trying to accomplish by creating your sign.  If your sign is a statement, make it a statement by sizing the font as such.  Small, delicate font would not be chosen to make a statement.  If your sign is selling something, or trying to brand a service or product, a memorable shape or design should be the top criteria for the sign.

Why do I need a business sign?

Visibility – One of the most important reasons to purchase a sign for your business or event is visibility.
People will immediately notice this  custom sign, and as such, they will notice your business.
Description – Another use for a  custom sign is to provide onlookers with a brief description of your business or event and what exactly your business or event does. This can be used to attract customers who may not necessarily be searching for your type of business that day, but who plan to use it in the near future.
It is important to select a catch phrase or motto that you will use with your sign that will attract the most potential customers.
Professionalism – Not having a sign can give your company a bad reputation. It will be impossible for people to spot your business signs or event and it will fade into the background. On the other side of this equation is a sign that is designed poorly, or worse, looks handmade.
A sign is very much like a business card, and it will need to include the most important information about your company in a pleasing and professional graphical way.
Marketing – Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone that stood on the street and flagged down customers night and day? Your business sign can function in this way, and be a silent marketing employee without any additional expense.

Different kind of outdoor sign materials

  • Foam PVC – 1/8 inch to 1 inch thick, and this smooth, paintable surface resists warping and is lightweight.  The strong composite material holds up well in both indoor and outdoor situations.

  • High density urethane foam – Commonly called “sign foam,” can sand-blast or route it for aesthetics.  Its malleable nature makes it a great choice for large decorative pillars and other projects that demand flexibility.

  • Acrylic – There are so many colors and sizes of acrylic. Customize your sign with a bright option, and feel secure that the sign won’t change color due to sunlight.

  • Polycarbonate – An impact-resistant

  • Interpro (Chloroplast) – Election or “For Sale” sign manufacturer?  -This is the product for you.

  • Wood – The old-fashioned choice for signs, wood warps, rots and quickly deteriorates.  When it comes to outdoor sign material choices, it lands soundly in last place.

ID Sign systems is dedicated to creating a rich relationship between our company and customers

ID Sign Systems announces the completion and launch of a website designed to provide access to information about our full line of products. The updated site offers product specifications and product selection, allowing users to choose the features, functions of the signage options.
ID Sign Systems of Rochester, NY partners with Design Chef Studios for some much needed internet marketing.
www.idsignsystems.com has been in need of some rich content for a long while. Overwhelmed with the day-to-day running of his business, Paul Dudley turns towww.designchefstudios.com for marketing his websites on-line.
"Environmental design and sign systems has proven to be a good business choice for me over the years," says Paul.  I pride myself on the quality of customer service I offer my clients." ID Sign Systems has been met with success over the past few years, opening branches in Washington, DC, Miami and the Caribbean as well as a northeast regional office serving New England.
Dissatisfied with the quality of service he was getting from the last web developer, Paul has turned to Design Chef Studios believing that his money would be much better spent on internet advertising and social media marketing; he's right. "This is a trend I've noticed more and more within this last year," says Becky, owner of Design Chef Studios. "I hear more and more complaints about the expense and the poor quality of leads businesses receive from print advertising. That's why I have been focusing the marketing initiatives for my clients through warm referrals and positive press."
